Tie-dyeing has a history of about 1,500 years in China, and the earliest existing object is a silk printed with twisted valerian in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, tie dyeing reached its peak, and "green and valet dress" was the basic style of Tang Dynasty fashion. In the Northern Song Dynasty, tie-dye production was complicated and cost a lot of labor, which was once forbidden by the imperial court, resulting in the decline of tie-dye technology. However, ethnic minorities in the southwest still retain this ancient skill. From the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Republic of China, home tie-dyeing has become very common. Towns such as Zhoucheng and Xizhou, which are famous for their densely packed house-to-house tie-dyeing workshops, have become famous tie-dyeing centers. The tie-dyeing techniques of Bai nationality in Dali, Yunnan Province and Zigong, Sichuan Province have been listed as national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture.100% cotton fabric company -DADITEXTILE

The process of tie-dyeing can be roughly divided into two processes: tie-dyeing and dip-dyeing:

1.tie-dyeing

In the traditional hand-woven primary color "homesite",hand stitching, stitching combination. Hand stitching is the main process of pattern formation. The aesthetic taste of the stitcher plays a decisive role. When stitching, the width, narrow, loose, tight, thin and dense of the half seam are different, and the length, tightness and thinness of the tie are different, which determines the diversity and gorgeous patterns of the tie-dye finished products. In the tie-dye world, there are absolutely no two tie-dye fabrics with the same pattern or color tone.

2.Dip dyeing

The traditional dyeing process uses plant tinctoria, a naturally growing indigo solution in persicaria tinctoria, radix isatis, mugwort, walnut peel, yellow pear peel and other plants.Dip-dyeing adopts manual and repeated dip-dyeing cold processing technology. Depulping, dyeing, repeat more than 20 processes, each dip, the color of the textile will be a deeper layer. After repeated dyeing, take out, rinse, dry, remove valine knots, integrate and iron, and then become a tie-dye cloth with various designs and colors.

What fabric is best for tie dye?

Cotton is considered to be the best fabric for tie-dye.The cotton fabric reacts perfectly with dyes and gets a vibrant color output to the tie-dye.But you can still opt for cotton and polyester blends. But the cotton percentage should be higher than polyester.Cotton fiber is microscopically rough and will hold the dye better than artificial fibers, which are smoother. Also, tie-dye, using store-bought dyes such as Rit, requires a sustained hot water bath for maximum durability.Cotton responds better to this than man made fibers.Tie-dyeing process has a history of thousands of years. There is no very strong requirement on the cloth to be colored, whether it is cotton, linen or chemical fiber can be tie-dyed.Currently, more people choose cotton fabric, so the characteristics of fabric depends on the choice of base cloth.Cotton cloth generally has better moisture absorption than chemical fiber cloth.Of course, the cloth will be more soft. It can be used in the production of T-shirts, skirts and wide-leg pants and other work clothes. There are also many types of tie-dye. The choice of dye can be plant dye or chemical fiber dye.Of course, natural color will be more environmental protection and healthy, because the process of tie-dye is more troublesome, the difficulty of mechanized production and high cost, so the price of tie-dye cloth will be relatively expensive. After the fabric is tie-dyed, the knotted part will keep the original color of the fabric because of the lack of dye, while other places will be stained with dye to varying degrees. Therefore, the fabric will present a unique style. The characteristics of the fabric dyed by different ligature and tying methods will also be biased.Although machines can be used for tie-dyeing now, the effect of manual tie-dyeing will be more natural and realistic. This kind of craft is irreplaceable by machine and has been spread to the present for thousands of years.
